History of the Town
The Rideau Military Settlements were born out of concern for the defense of Upper Canada from invasion by the United States.
The War of 1812 had revealed the vulnerability of the thin line of settlement along the St. Lawrence River between Montreal and Kingston. Perth was designed to direct people to an unsettled interior and was accomplished through government sponsored military settlement and assisted immigration.
The original townships surveyed for the Rideau Military Settlement in 1816 were not located on the Rideau Lakes or Rideau River but were part of the Tay watershed located in Bathurst, Drummond, parts of Sherbrooke and Beckwith townships.
Perth was founded in 1816 as a military settlement and has grown and changed over the 200 years which is represented in the Town of Perth’s brand “Heritage Perth” and tag line “Aged to Perfection!”. Perth will celebrate its 200th Anniversary in 2016.
